IT 4 Special Needs

Every child and every young adult has the right to enjoy the fun of competing of, hitting the keyboard, presenting new ideas and winning IT challenges. The IT4Special Needs, in the annual IT Marathon, is a competition program where students with dis abilities can find the environment to exercise this right. IT4Special Needs offers the opportunities to show the ability of students with special needs to contribute to the IT field with new ideas, software tools, IT equipment, etc. Two categories of participation are offered:

1. ITShowcase 4SpecialNeeds

2. IT4SpecialNeeds Kids.

ITShowcase 4SpecialNeeds aims at giving the opportunity to the students to show and present their IT projects. An IT project can be a software or hardware product developed with any tool. The IT4SpecialNeeds kids will be an opportunity to allow kids with disabilities to present their projects developed using the scratch tool.

In both categories, projects that help people with disabilities in their everyday lives will be highly ranked.

 

As a part of the IT Marathon, this competition encourages students from all the UAE schools to participate. The special needs students will benefit from their time together at the College of Information Technology, UAEU.

The IT4Special needs consists of two categories.

    • ITShowcase 4SpecialNeeds aims at giving the opportunity to the students from grade 5 to grade 12 to show and present their IT projects. An IT project can be software or hardware product developed with any IT tool. In this category, a project can be done and presented by a team of no more than 2 students.
      To enter as a contestant in this competition, please email us   (specialneeds.itm@uaeu.ac.ae)  by March 23, 2017 :

      • A summary of your project

      • Your name.

      • Your grade level

      • The name and address of your school

      • The name of your supervisor/teacher.

      • The subject title of the email should be "IT4SN"

    •  The IT4SpecialNeeds kids will be an opportunity to allow kids with disabilities from grade 1 to grade 6 to present their projects developed using the scratch tool (https://scratch.mit.edu/). Teams in this category are formed by only one student.
      To enter as a contestant in this competition, please follow these steps:

      1. You should first register under Arabic scratch website (https://scratch.mit.edu/) and download the programming tool. You can study Scratch on your own as several learning resources can be found at https://scratch.mit.edu/. The best starting point for learning is to use the Help files that accompany the tool after installing it (Tip: Click the "Want Help?" button inside the Scratch tool).

      2. Develop your own project at home (more info below).

      3. Upload your project to the Web via the "Share it!" button inside the Scratch tool.

      4. E-mail us (specialneeds.itm@uaeu.ac.ae) the following details by March 23, 2017 :

        • The URL of your project after the upload.

        • Your name.

        • Your grade level

        • The name and address of your school

        • The name of your supervisor/teacher.

General rules

  • Registered projects shall be original and novel. 

  • Only new projects will be accepted. Projects submitted in the previous IT Marathon competitions will be disallowed and discarded.

  • Plagiarism is a serious offence and will not be tolerated. Any team commits this offence will be immediately disqualified and prohibited from future participation.

  • All accessories including computers, monitors, mouse, keyboard etc have to be arranged by the participants themselves. The FIT will not be held responsible for the damage to any of the teams’ belongings.

  Judging criteria

  • Novelty of design, idea, innovation and creativity

  • Practical aspects and impacts of idea

  • Intended functionality and working condition

  • Complexity: Does it tap into Scratch features such as sounds, animations, controls, etc.

  • Demonstration of proficiency

  • Project’s presentation
